Campaign Tracking with Short Links: A Hands-On UTM Guide
Build a small, consistent measurement system for email, social, and print campaigns, then use click data to decide what to improve.
In this guide
- UTM values identify where a visit came from; click totals alone do not.
- One link per channel or placement makes comparisons much easier.
- A useful review asks what action to take, not only how many clicks occurred.
Separate the link from the measurement plan
A campaign becomes easier to evaluate when each important distribution point has a consistent label. `utm_source` answers who or what sent the visitor, `utm_medium` describes the channel, and `utm_campaign` names the promotion. Add `utm_content` when two links in the same placement need to be distinguished, such as a hero button and a footer link.
Use lowercase values and a stable separator such as hyphens. Decide the vocabulary before creating links: `newsletter` and `email-newsletter` should not become two accidental sources for the same channel. UTM parameters are visible in the destination URL, so never place personal data or secrets in them.
Click analytics and UTM analytics answer related but different questions. The short-link dashboard can show activity on the redirect; the analytics platform on the destination can connect the visit to a campaign. Compare like with like and remember that clicks are not the same thing as purchases, sign-ups, or other outcomes.
A naming plan you can reuse
| Placement | source | medium | campaign | content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring email | newsletter | spring-open-house | hero | |
| Instagram profile | social | spring-open-house | bio | |
| Printed poster | community-center | offline | spring-open-house | poster-a |
Walkthrough: create a trackable campaign link
Create separate short links when you want to compare placements. Keep the destination page the same so the placement is the main variable.
Start with one destination
Open the Shrtnlynx.pro home page and paste the landing-page URL. Confirm that the page works before adding tracking.
Open the optional UTM builder
Select Show Premium Options, then Add UTM Parameters. Fill Source, Medium, and Campaign using your agreed naming plan.
For a newsletter: newsletter / email / spring-open-houseLabel two placements separately
Use Content for the placement or creative, such as `hero` and `footer`. Create another short link for a different channel rather than reusing the same campaign label everywhere.
Review the destination before sharing
After shortening, open the result and inspect the final address if your analytics platform is available. Confirm that the UTM values are spelled and capitalized as planned.
Review results on a schedule
After enough time has passed for the channel to receive traffic, compare clicks, referrers, devices, and the downstream action that matters to your project.

Interpret the result without overclaiming
Before
Email: 42 clicks · Instagram: 18 clicks · Poster: 11 clicksAfter / next step
Next test: keep the email audience, try a clearer poster call-to-action, and check conversions before declaring a winner.Takeaway: The counts show where people clicked, not why they clicked or whether they completed the goal. Look at the same time window and the downstream result before changing the campaign.
A 15-minute campaign review
- Check that each link reached the intended destination and was not deleted or expired.
- Compare the same date range for each placement.
- Look for a sudden spike or a referrer you do not recognize before treating it as normal audience demand.
- Record one decision: reshare, revise the message, improve the landing page, or stop spending time on the channel.
- Do not label a low-click channel as a failure until you have checked reach, audience fit, and the downstream goal.
