How Shrtnlynx.pro Works
A detailed look at the technology and process behind URL shortening, from the moment you paste a link to the instant your visitors arrive at their destination.
The Shortening Process
Six stages connect link creation, redirect handling, and click reporting.
You Paste Your Long URL
The process starts when you paste a valid web address into the Shrtnlynx.pro shortening form. The URL can include query parameters, path segments, or anchors. You can optionally add a custom short code, password prompt, or expiration date at this stage.
Technical detail: The form checks the address before submission, and the server parses it again before creating a link. Addresses that cannot be parsed as URLs are rejected.
Our Server Generates a Unique Short Code
When your URL reaches the service, a short code is generated for it. The default codes use a compact, URL-safe format. If you choose a custom code, the service checks whether that code is already in use before creating the link.
Technical detail: The service uses a URL-safe unique string generator and verifies that a code is available before the link is created.
The Mapping Is Stored in Our Database
Your original URL and its corresponding short code are stored together so the service can resolve the short link later. Link settings such as a custom code, password protection, and expiration are stored with the link when they are enabled.
Technical detail: The application uses a relational database for its link records. Password-protected links store a password hash rather than the plaintext password.
The Redirect Happens
When someone clicks your shortened link, their browser requests that short code from the service. The service looks up the destination and sends the browser to the original URL. The browser follows the redirect and begins loading the destination page.
Technical detail: Before a redirect is sent, the service checks whether the link has expired or needs a password. An expired link is shown as unavailable and a protected link displays a password form.
We Record Analytics for Every Click
When someone clicks a short link, the service records the click time, referrer, device type, browser, and operating system. These details are associated with the link so the dashboard can show a more useful summary than a click total alone.
Technical detail: The application parses the visitor's user-agent string to group click data by device type, browser, and operating system. Refer to the Privacy Policy for information about data collection.
You See Your Analytics Dashboard
The dashboard organizes click data for each link. You can review click totals over time, device type, browser, operating system, and referrer information to compare how and where you shared a link.
Technical detail: The dashboard aggregates stored click records when you open an individual link's analytics view.
Advanced Features Explained
How our more advanced features work under the hood.
QR Code Generation
A created link can be converted to a downloadable QR code. The code contains the short URL, so a scan follows the same redirect and is counted like another visit to that link.
Password Protection
Password-protected links show a prompt before redirecting. The stored password is hashed with scrypt rather than kept as plain text. This prompt is useful for limited, non-sensitive sharing, but confidential content still needs the destination service's own account and permission controls.
Link Expiration
Links with expiration dates are checked server-side on each visit. When a link has expired, the server returns an HTTP 410 (Gone) response and shows an expiration message instead of redirecting.
User Authentication
Shrtnlynx.pro uses a Replit-managed sign-in flow. Authentication is handled by the identity provider, while the application stores the session needed to associate links and analytics with the signed-in account.
Security Architecture
Public traffic is served over HTTPS. API inputs are validated before database operations, and the application uses Drizzle ORM for structured database access. No online service can promise absolute security, so sensitive destinations should keep their own access controls.
Performance & Reliability
Direct Redirect Flow
A short link maps to its destination URL, so a visitor can move from the shared link to the intended page without having to copy or reconstruct a long address.
PostgreSQL with Drizzle ORM
We use PostgreSQL as our primary database, chosen for its reliability, ACID compliance, and powerful querying capabilities. Drizzle ORM provides type-safe database access from our TypeScript codebase, catching data model errors at compile time rather than runtime. Database connections are pooled for efficiency under concurrent load.
Built on Node.js + Express
Our backend is built with Node.js and Express. TypeScript helps keep the application code consistent as features evolve.
React Frontend with Vite
The Shrtnlynx.pro dashboard is built as a React single-page application (SPA) bundled with Vite for fast builds and excellent developer experience. TanStack Query (React Query) manages server state with intelligent caching, ensuring you see fresh analytics data without unnecessary API calls. UI components are built on shadcn/ui and Radix UI for accessible, consistent interface elements.
See It in Action
The best way to understand the workflow is to sign in and create a link, then open its analytics view after testing the redirect.
